Dr. Gutowski was born in Poland while it was still under communist rule. His family escaped marshal law in 1981 and eventually settled in the United States. He is a son of college math professors; he grew up in Michigan. Dr. Gutowski studied mathematics at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor graduating with the Bachelor of Science degree with distinction. He then earned Doctor of Medicine from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. Internship and residency in general surgery were also completed at Wayne State University, Detroit Medical Center.
Dr. Gutowski came to Modesto in 1999, after finishing residency training. He has been in practice with Gould Medical Group which is affiliated with Sutter Gould Medical Foundation and Sutter Health. While in residency, Dr. Gutowski joined the Army Reserves. He did two combat tours of duty as a trauma surgeon, first in Afghanistan in 2003, and second in Iraq in 2008.
Dr. Gutowski is board certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
Dr. Gutowski’s interest in minimally invasive surgery begun in residency. He has been performing advanced laparoscopy ever since. He taught a course in laparoscopic inguinal and incisional hernia repair sponsored by Davol, one of the leading mesh companies. Dr. Gutowski started performing robotic surgery when Memorial Medical Center acquired the daVinci SI robot in 2012. He performed the first fully robotic esophagectomy in Northern California in June of 2013.
Dr. Gutowski is married and lives with his family in Modesto. His personal interests include computers, travel, skiing and mountain biking.
